Telcom' team in Rangoon

On November 12 1945, the first public telegram from Burma was sent by the Manager of the Telcom unit in Rangoon, to his wife in England. The Telcom team subsequently played a vital part in communictations within the country. In August, 1945, during the first Japanese surrender in Rangoon, "Telcom" cleared 83, 000 words filed by 30 war correspondants in 48 hours. Operators worked for 36 hours continuously transmitting the news to the world. Soon after V-J Day when hundreds of released prisoners-of-war arrived in Rangoon on their way home from Siam and French Indo-China, the "Telcom" unit despatched free telegrams for them to relatives in many countries. The team are shown in this photograph: left to right (back row): P.R. Braganza, C.B. Halge, C.F. Pansy, T.D. Pereira; (second row): F.O. Noronha, N.R. Sidhwa, J.T. de Souza, V.E.
